Before, During, and After Photos
(I apologize for the poor quality of the older photos. I don’t have a scanner readily available, so some of these are digital pictures of print photos. Someday I might head over to Kinko’s and do these right; in the meantime, these crappy photos should serve as decent before and after photos. We’re not trying to win any photography contests here, just trying to demonstrate how my weight has changed over the years.)
First, one from waaaaay before. This is from my senior year high school yearbook, so it must have been taken in 1986 or 1987. I don’t remember exactly what I weighed, but I remember being very disappointed that I couldn’t give blood in the school blood drive because I didn’t meet the minimum weight of 110 lbs. I think I weighed more than 100, though.
I stayed between 100 and 110 lbs through college, and then I discovered the low-fat, high-carb fad. By 2004 or 2005, I looked like this:
I don’t know exactly how much I weighed in the above photo, but I’m guessing around 160. Not my highest weight (167 lbs in July 2002), but enough that I loathe this photo. I loathe my extra chin. I loathe the pink hams that are my upper arms. (I can’t even stand that sweater any more, even though it fits much better now. It’s in the giveaway box, waiting to be taken to Goodwill.)
Here’s what I looked like in October 2007, when I weighed about 150 lbs. The difference is somewhat noticeable, but you can tell I have a way to go. (The sun is in my eyes, too, hence the grimace.)
Yes, I did make the elaborate coffee cake in the foreground, and yes, I ate a piece. I am not spending all day making a pastry and not having some. (The trick is not to make them too often. Like, maybe, once a year.) But please also note that there is plenty of good old bacon and deviled eggs on the table, too, thanks to my husband, who has taken good care of me even when I haven’t taken good care of myself.
I was absolutely thrilled when my brother-in-law sent me this one, from Christmas 2007:
I weigh about 147 lbs there, but I think I’m much slimmer than in the 150 lb photo. I was stuck at 147 for a rather long time, maybe 6 weeks, but I am convinced that I must’ve lost some fat and gained some lean body mass during that time, because I look a lot smaller.

Great photo timeline. Thanks for sharing. I guess you still like to wear Santa hats?
I have a small head and really straight hair that doesn’t “poof” much, so they are always too big for me.

The Santa hat is a tradition in my husband’s family, with whom we generally celebrate Christmas. It used to go to the youngest person - my husband for many years, then my sister-in-law. Then finally his mom decided that the hats should get passed around.

love the pics, and the barby prep. I’m still holding out for the little egg pic, though.

Hey, I know the feeling
I’m 6′1″ and weighed about 175 lb in college and reached about 195 lb by age 40. Then at age 42 I got married and my wife suggested I get a physical each year. The doc said my cholesterol was too high at about 210 and that I should go on a low fat diet and take a statin to lower that nasty cholesterol.
Well, you know, stuff happens
I gained about 50 lb trying to do low fat. Just what the drug-pushing big Pharma wants. My blood pressure was rising, my blood sugar was rising, I was lethargic - signs of metabolic syndrome creeping in. But with Lipitor my cholesterol was 130, so I thought I must be well - a little extra weight could’t hurt, right?
I went to a new doctor three years ago who suggested I needed to get back down to 200 lb and she said I should exercise every day. So I started walking 2+ miles every day and switched to a fairly low carb diet, complete with aspartame and splenda. Except I was still addicted to sugar and cheated on weekends. I only managed to lose about 10 lb that year. Then about 2 years ago I found the WAPF and Dr Mercola web pages, dropped the Lipitor, and resolved to break my sugar addiction. I quickly lost 15 lb in three months and then another 5 lb over the next 6 months. I made it down to 213 lb, but I’ve been on a very slow re-bound over the last year and now I’m back up to 223 lb, but I’m sure more of it is muscle now
Oh, well … time to cut back a little more on carbs! Good luck on your continuing weight loss. Watch out for the rebound

You’re looking great! What a difference from October to December. Sure looks like more than 3 pounds difference. Must be your body recomposing itself. Do you do measurements? What do the inches say?
Thanks for posting the series. Keep up the good work!

Hi, Vesna - thanks for stopping by. I do measure occasionally, but I don’t actually write them down, so I can’t give exact numbers or an exact time frame. I do know that my waist was over 30″ and my hips were over 42″ before I rediscovered low-carb. Now my waist is getting really close to 29″ (about 29 1/4″
and my hips are about 40 1/2″.
