About the Migraineur

by psipsina @ 6:52 pm

My name is Dianne Cowan, and I started this blog early in 2007 as self-help for my struggles dealing with migraine disease.  Somewhere along the way, I became one of the lucky ones who got my migraines under control with a very low dose of Inderal.  In the process, I saw several specialists, including an endocrinologist who put me (back) on the Atkins diet for polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal disorder with a strong correlation to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.  In that weird way that one thing leads to another, this blog seems to have morphed into a blog about my general health, and low carb looms large in that arena.  But who knows what this blog will be about a year from now?

Disclaimer.  I am not a physician, just a layperson who has educated herself on issues of health and nutrition.  I do not recommend or endorse any treatment or regimen, including any drugs I myself take or any diet or regimen I myself follow.  Even if I were a physician, I could not make such recommendations without seeing you.  You should find a doctor who listens to you and whom you trust, and discuss any treatment options with him or her.  On the other hand, I do not think that doctors are gods, and therefore I encourage all people who are concerned about their health to educate themselves and come to their own conclusions about the best course of treatment for migraine, PCOS, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, or any other medical condition.

  3. Dear Dianne:

I am working on a project on health care blogging for Robert Kozinets, a professor at York University’s Schulich School of Business in Toronto, Canada. We are currently working on a project about active bloggers in the health care sphere. Your excellent blog, which I personally read, “Migraineur” has drawn our attention, and he would very much like to talk to you in a telephone interview.

The interview is informal and conversational in style, will take approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours, and will be conducted at a mutually convenient time that we would set up in advance. We will not publicly reveal or publish your name or other personal information in the research. What you say will be kept confidential and only shared with the client. Professor Kozinets is paying $100 (US) for this interview, which he can issue as a check and send by mail to you, or can pay into your Paypal account upon completion of the interview.

We would really like to include your insights in our project. We hope to hear back from you over the next day or two and would be delighted to answer any questions you may have.

    Cheers,

    Melissa

  7. I go on and off a low carb diet and have for the past 10 years. I also suffer from migraines which I use Zomig for. When I start the low carb diet I get a migraine within the first 24 hours. I knock it out with the Zomig and maybe a little phengren. I feel excellent when I am on a low carb diet. The problem is that after a couple of weeks the headaches start repeating and I go back to carbs.

  8. I am desperate for help with my migraines. I have been prescribed antidepressants and now Inderal. Based on much research I have decided to not use the Inderal. Some of the side affects are frightening.

When afflicted with a migraine I currently take Mersyndol(Codeine and Acetaminophen) for 2 days straight just for pain management.

Many times they appear to be hormonal or weather related.

    I am truly frustrated
