After yesterday’s blog entry in which I revealed that I’ve been losing about a pound a week eating well over 2,000 calories a day, I just had to share news of another low-carb success.
Remember my friend Glodsmith? Well, he sent an e-mail to a lot of his friends yesterday, detailing some of the measurable effects of a low-carb diet on his health. I present it unedited (except I cleaned up his table, because, well, I wanted to learn how to do a table in html) and with his permission.

Here are my lab results, one set taken just before eliminating substantially all carbohydrates from my diet and beginning to consume approximately 2/3 of my calories in the form of mostly-saturated fat, and the second set three months in. Read ‘em and weep:
| Lipid | 6-Aug | 3-Nov | % delta |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cholesterol, mg/dl | 216 | 198 | -8.3 |
| HDL mg/dl | 60 | 76 | 26.7 |
| Triglycerides, mg/dl | 114 | 73 | -36.0 |
| LDL, mg/dl | 133 | 107 | -19.5 |
| Non-HDL Cholesterol, mg/dl | 156 | 122 | -21.8 |
Thirty-six percent reduction in triglycerides. LDL down almost twenty percent. HDL up almost twenty-seven percent.
Oh, and glycosolated hemoglobin: 4.8 percent. I have cured myself of diabetes.
All other metabolic panel and other results are in normal ranges and substantially unchanged.
Not to mention 45 pounds of weight loss without the experience of hunger. Whom am I to believe, the American Medical, Heart and Diabetes Associations or my lying eyes?Do yourself a favor. Stop consuming any product containing grain or sugar, and triple your intake of saturated and unsaturated fats. Suggested foodstuffs: rib steak, eggs, bacon, brisket, soft cheeses, foie gras and butter.
———————————-
I’ve commented many times before, on my own blog and on others’, about how lonely low-carb can be. We’re all so brainwashed about how bad rib steak, eggs, bacon, brisket, soft cheeses, foie gras, and butter are that not only can it be a little hard for an overweight person to order these in a restaurant, but when we do get up the courage to order such things, we often feel like we can’t spread the news of just how good those things really are for our health unless we want to start an argument. It’s still an uphill battle, and meanwhile everyone around us is talking about their favorite brands of low-fat yogurt and nuking those stupid Weight Watchers meals for lunch while we keep our mouths shut. To this day, Glodsmith is the only person I have met in person who is as devoted to the low-carb diet as I am. It’s nice having company, and it’s a delight to see that this is working for him as well as it’s working for me.
Glodsmith, I raise my single daily glass of wine to your health (and follow it up with a coupla nice chicken thighs, skin included). Thank you for having the courage to tell all your friends that this is good stuff!
